Lan Zhang specialises in the study of art from an anthropological perspective, with a particular focus on the role of women in society. Ancient symbols are one of the most important elements in her artworks. She is deeply fascinated by ancient art and believes that the spirit of the ancients is similar to that of modern people in the technological and material world. Primitive cave cultures, prehistoric cliff paintings and later burial cultures, including indigenous art from ancient Egypt, Maya, Africa and Asia, have left deep traces in her work. Her goal is to revive these art forms and their embedded meanings to create an almost modern "totemic" visual message that conveys a new and uplifting spirituality, applicable to contemporary life.
The artist has collated and fused her research into ancient cave murals and some Aboriginal art into standard 'word graphics'. These graphics include geometric shapes, words, iconic symbols and biosigns that form a series of sketches or doodles to express or narrate the stories that surround her. These elements form a new kind of "hieroglyphic" design, arranged in the form of direct symbols. Through her work, we are able to decipher her views on social issues and her profound thoughts on gender identity.
